Another paralyzing message to the church has been “Some Send and Some Go”. I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve heard this phrase repeated.
The message usually comes from missionaries or pastors promoting a sense of partnership with missionaries with our dollars fulfilling our part of the partnership. By itself, it’s a righteous thought. From the days when Karen and I had precious little to give until today, it has been our joy to “partner” with missionaries all over the world.
Here’s the problem: It’s a short jump from responding to this phrase “Some Send and Some Go” with missionary support, to believing across the board that funding a ministry is equal to doing ministry. As a young adult trying to find my place in the Church, I made that jump. In fact, I found it quite liberating that making money and using it to support ministries was to be my role in life.
The naivety of that decision and the consequences that followed were life changing. While gaining respect from those we funded, I found myself at the lowest point of my spiritual life until I led a friend to the Lord…and got my ‘mojo’ back.
You see, you and I don’t “Send” missionaries or anyone else. Only God sends us and He sends all of us into our personal mission fields, via the Great Commission in Matt 28:19, with His Promise in John 15:11 to fill us with joy when we ourselves bear fruit.
